Day 06: Full-Day Lhasa Sightseeing

We will dedicate this day to discovering Lhasa. Our visit will commence with a visit to the imposing Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas. It is one of the most majestic and impressive buildings in the whole of Asia, and it is accessed via a long staircase. The building, built of stone, wood, and earth, is immense, and its thirteen floors house over a thousand rooms and ten thousand chapels.

We will then continue to Jokhang Temple, the oldest heart of Lhasa. Inside the temple, there are more than 300 statues, including the 17th-century golden one depicting Sakyamuni, 26 meters high, and on the first floor, the 7th-century statues of King Songtsan Gampo.

After visiting the temple, we will walk in Barkhor Street, a ring of about eight hundred meters. Here, the faithful who have come on pilgrimage to Lhasa walk clockwise, making prostrations and rotating the prayer wheels to recite the sacred Mantra Om mani padme hum.

If time allows, we will also explore the famous Drepung Monastery, once an important monastic community founded in the 15th century. Then, we will continue to visit Sera Monastery, five kilometres from Lhasa. The large monastic complex was famous for the tantric studies and teachings that were imparted to over seven thousand monks.

From here, the road descends rapidly towards the lake and climbs again to another Pass named Karo La at 5010 m. Shortly, Gyantse will arrive in front of us. Shigatse is a 90 km road distance from this town, which takes another 1.5-hour comfortable drive.

Leaving Saga, we will drive along the southern route where the Himalayas gradually rise, bestowing you the magical views. Eventually, we will reach Old Dzongba- an alpine pasture for yak and sheep grazing. The road ahead will lead us to Paryang, where the Chinese military base is located.

We will then turn west and drive towards Horchu River. A little ahead, the military checkpost will check our permits. Then, we will head a little further for about ten minutes and stop for lunch.

The path will then direct us to the mighty Mayumla Pass at 5211 m. From here, it is only a 2-hour drive to Lake Mansarovar. This last leg of the drive may offer you views of kiang (wild ass) and antelopes.

Day 10: Drive from Mansarovar Lake to Darchen (4664 m, 40 km)

Early wake-up in the pristine atmosphere of Lake Mansarovar. The serene turquoise waters of Lake Mansarovar are surrounded by Mount Kailash and Swastika Mountain (Gurla Mandhata). It is separated from the Rakshasatal “dead lake” by a thin line. Chiu Monastery of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is located along the northwestern bank of the lake.

After a ritual ablution with the holy water of the lake, we will sit on its shore and perform a Pooja for ourselves and our ancestors. We will then walk around the lake clockwise. The Parikrama around the lake will be completed within 4 to 5 hours. It is believed the Kora around Kailash is incomplete without Lake Mansarovat circumnavigation.

After completing the circumambulation of the lake, we will visit the Chiu monastery and bathe in its natural hot spring, enjoying the northern view of Kailash.

Now, we will continue our drive for about an hour to reach Darchen, which is the starting point of the Kailash Circumnavigation.

Day 11: First Day of Outer Kora – Trek to Dirapuk (4920 m, 14 km, 5-6 hours)

Today signifies the beginning of our Outer Kora of the sacred Mount Kailash, whose total circumference, from Darchen to Darchen, is 53 km. We will depart early in the morning, enjoying the breathtaking view of the beautiful plain. We will walk alongside the yaks and horses, and the only sound we will hear is the silent murmur of faithful chanting mantras with their rosaries.

But first, we need to drive 5 km to reach Tarboche as the Buddhist Call and Yamadwar referred by the Hindus. The gateway lies at an altitude of 15,500 ft. and is believed to be guarded by the God of Death, Lord Yama, son of God Surya (Sun). Only pure souls with honest hearts can pass through this gate and proceed forward according to the myth.

After passing through the gate, we start trekking to Dirapuk, 14 km away. The trail leading us to Dirapuk is relatively flat, covered with a loose pile of stones. There will be constant ups and downs till we reach our overnight destination.

The Dirapuk monastery is close to the northern face of Kailash and a good vantage point for our Darshana. The monastery offers accommodation in its guesthouse where we may share rooms with 4 or 5 other fellow Yatris.

If the rooms are full, we may have to set up camp on the grounds that are available from the monastery.

Day 12: Second Day of Outer Kora – On to Zuthulphuk (4790 m, 22 km, 7-8 hours)

Today is the most important part of the circumnavigation around Kailash, and it is the most challenging as the route involves overcoming the Drolma La Pass (5630 m).

We will wake up before dawn and start hiking to cross the Jarok Donkhang and sky burial site Shiva Tsal (5330m). As a sign of leaving negative Karma behind, we will follow the old tradition and leave our old clothes, drops of blood, or any other old items here and pray for a new life we can fill with good Karma.

From here, walking on a snowy path, we will climb to Drolma La Pass. The pass is regarded as the holy abode of Goddess Drolma, or Tara, who is considered Goddess Parvati by the Hindu faith.

At the Pass, we will offer prayer flags and descend to the mystical lake of Gaurikunda or Tso Tuksche at 5608 m. According to Hindu mythology, it is the lake where Goddess Parvati created lord Ganesha. Because of its sacredness, devotees take a bottle of water to their homes.

We will again climb down vertically and arrive at the Axe of Karma, which is believed to cut our negative Karma and sins. We will now walk along the rocky and snowy path to reach ZhutulPuk monastery. It is known as the Cave of Miracles in Tibet. Supposedly, it is the site where sage Milarepa meditated and conducted numerous miracles.

ZhutulPuk monastery also offers us accommodation in a simple guesthouse on a shared basis. Here, we may also need to stay in a camp in case of full.
